Positions show as open that I already closed

What this does

VEXA does not import trades. It imports fills, and rebuilds trades from them. A position opens when your net size moves away from zero and closes when it returns to zero. Until the closing fills arrive, the position stays open, no matter what your broker’s screen says.

That is why a position you closed weeks ago can still be sitting in your open positions: VEXA has the buys and not the sells.

Before you start

Note the symbol and roughly when you opened and closed it. You will need the date range to fix it.

Why it happens

The export window started mid-position. You bought in March, sold in June, and exported April onwards. VEXA has a sale with no purchase behind it, which reconstructs as a short position rather than a closed long. This is the most common version and it usually shows as a short you never took.

The export window ended mid-position. The mirror image. The entry is in and the exit is not.

The closing fills are in a file you have not uploaded. Brokers that split exports by segment or by product are the usual culprits. Everything covered in Some of my trades are missing applies here too.

Long-held crypto spot. Buying an asset repeatedly and never selling produces a lot of opening fills and no closing ones. That position is genuinely open, and it is correct for it to be there.

An option expired worthless. Nothing closed it, because nothing traded. There is no closing fill to import, at your broker or anywhere else. See How options trades are imported.

Steps

Find the position first, then fix it.

What you should see

Once the missing fills arrive, the position disappears from Portfolio and a closed trade appears in its place, with the full set of executions on its timeline and a real P&L.

Re-uploading a wider window is safe. The fills you already have are recognised and skipped, so only the new ones are added.

Some stale positions clear on their own. VEXA refuses to keep sell-only orphan positions older than about a month, and expired option positions, because both are artifacts of an incomplete import rather than something you hold.

The other fix: enter the closing fill by hand

If it is one trade and you cannot get a better export, add the closing execution yourself on the web at Trades, then the trade, then Executions Timeline. Adding a closing execution flattens the position and turns it into a closed trade. See Add or edit executions on a trade.

This is a per-trade fix. For more than a handful, the wider export is faster and more accurate.

If it doesn’t work

• The position is short and you never shorted. Classic mid-position window. Export from before your first purchase of that symbol.
• The size is not a round number. Fills are missing rather than the whole exit. A wider export usually resolves it.
• The position is real and you do still hold it. Then it belongs there. Open positions do not count towards realized P&L, which is worth knowing when comparing totals. See Your P&L does not match your broker.
