Widget reference: performance metrics

Every single-number tile on the Metrics board, what it means in plain English, its formula, and what it shows when there is nothing to average.

What this does

These are the tiles that show one number. They sit at the top of the Metrics board and answer the questions you ask most: how much, how often, how good.

Before you start

Every tile below counts only the trades that pass your current date range and account filter. The same tile with a different range is a different number.

The tiles

Total P&L is the net money you made or lost on closed trades in range, after costs.

total P&L = sum of every trade's P&L

Commissions are already inside each trade’s P&L, so this is money in your pocket, not a gross figure.

Win rate is the share of your closed trades that made money.

win rate = winning trades / all closed trades x 100

Break-even trades stay in the denominator. The Trades screen divides differently and legitimately shows a higher number. See Why two pages show different win rates.

Profit factor is how many dollars you made for each dollar you lost.

profit factor = gross profit / gross loss

Above 1.00 means you are net profitable over the range. If you had winners and no losers at all, the tile shows the infinity symbol rather than a number, because there is nothing to divide by.

Commissions is what the trades in range cost you in fees.

commissions = sum of every trade's commission

It is shown with a leading minus sign.

Average win and average loss are the means of the two buckets.

average win = gross profit / number of winning trades
average loss = gross loss / number of losing trades

Average loss is shown as a negative number so the pair reads at a glance. With no winners or no losers in range, the tile shows a dash rather than $0. That dash means “nothing to average”, which is not the same claim as zero.

Best day is your single most profitable calendar day in range, found by summing each day and taking the highest positive total. Worst day is the lowest negative total. A range where every day lost money has no best day, so that tile shows a dash instead of promoting the least bad day.

Total volume is how many shares or contracts changed hands, counting entries and exits.

volume = sum of the absolute quantity of every fill

When a trade carries no fill-level detail, VEXA uses the trade quantity doubled, assuming one entry and one exit.

Average trades per day divides by days you actually traded.

avg trades per day = total trades / total trading days

Days with no trades are not in the denominator, so a quiet month does not deflate the figure.

What you should see

Numbers that reconcile with each other. Total P&L should equal the average win times the number of wins, plus the average loss times the number of losses, give or take rounding. If it does not, you are reading two different filter sets.

If it doesn’t work

  • A tile shows a dash. That bucket is empty for this range. Widen the range.
  • Profit factor shows an infinity symbol. You have no losing trades in range. Widen the range and it becomes a number.
  • The tiles disagree with your broker. Check the range and the account filter before anything else. See Date range, account and advanced filters.
