The options widget that is not on the board by default, how to add it, and what the days-to-expiry buckets are measured from.

What this does

This widget groups your options trades by how much time was left on the contract when you entered, and totals the P&L of each group. It shows whether your money comes from weeklies, from thirty days out, or from something further along the curve.

Before you start

It is not on the board when you start. Every other widget is on by default; this one is off, because it is empty for anyone who does not trade options. You have to add it once.

It only reads options trades. Stock, futures, forex and crypto trades have no expiry, so they are not in it.

Steps

  1. Open Metrics in the sidebar.
  2. Press Edit, then Add.
  3. Choose P&L by Days to Expiry.
  4. Press Done.

  2. Tap Edit in the toolbar, then tap +.
  3. Choose P&L by Days to Expiry.
  4. Tap Done.

  4. Tap Done.

How the buckets are measured

Days to expiry is counted at entry, from the day you opened the position to the contract’s expiry date. A contract bought with nine days left sits in the same bucket whether you held it for an hour or to expiry.

On iPhone the card has a control to switch between total P&L per bucket and average P&L per bucket. Total tells you where the money came from. Average tells you which bucket treats you best per trade, which is the more honest comparison when one bucket has far more trades than the others.

What you should see

One bar per days-to-expiry group, with your options trades distributed across them. An account with no options trades shows an empty state saying so rather than an empty chart.

Once added, the widget stays on your board. On the phones and tablets that arrangement is stored on the device, so adding it on your phone does not add it on the web.

If it doesn’t work

  • You cannot find it in the Add list. It is already on your board. Scroll down.
  • The widget is empty. Either there are no options trades in your range, or your imports do not carry an expiry date for those contracts.
  • It disappeared on another device. Widget visibility is per device on iPhone, iPad, Android and Android tablet. Add it again there.
