Edit or delete an open position

Correct the entry price, size, direction or open date of a position, or remove one that should not be there, and what deleting takes with it.

Web Updated

What this does

Sometimes a position lands with the wrong details, or lands when it should not have. Editing corrects it. Deleting removes it.

Before you start

Editing and deleting positions is a web feature. The iPad and Android tablet Portfolio screens show positions and their execution history but have no edit or delete control. Open VEXA in a browser to make a change.

Reach for this only after a sync. Most wrong positions are a symptom of a missing import rather than bad data: if the closing fill never arrived, syncing the broker again closes the position properly and keeps the history. Editing by hand is the fallback when the broker will not produce the fill.

Steps

Web only

  1. Open Portfolio in the sidebar.
  2. Find the position, using the search box if the list is long.
  3. To correct it, use the edit action on the row.
  4. Change any of Average entry, Position size, Direction and Open date, then save.
  5. To remove it, use the delete action on the row and confirm.

What you can change

FieldNotes
Average entrythe blended price you are carrying the position at
Position sizein shares, contracts or units, whichever the instrument uses
Directionlong or short
Open dateused for the days-held count

The dialog states which unit the size is in, because it differs by instrument. Getting that wrong is the most common editing mistake: entering a share count on an options position overstates it a hundredfold.

What deleting takes with it

Deleting removes the open position and its stored execution history, and it cannot be undone. The confirmation says so.

If the position came from a broker sync, deleting it does not stop the broker sending it again. The next sync can recreate it. A position that keeps coming back is telling you the source data still contains it, which is a reason to fix the import rather than delete it a second time.

What you should see

The row updates immediately with your new values, and the summary tiles at the top recalculate to match. A deleted position disappears from the list and its value drops out of the exposure tiles.

If it doesn’t work

  • The values still look wrong after editing. The mark, not the entry, may be the problem. See Mark quality.
  • The P&L is still blank after editing. Editing does not resolve a contract multiplier. See Why some position values are blank.
  • The position came back after you deleted it. The next broker sync recreated it from source data that still holds it open.
  • You are on a tablet and there is no edit control. There is not one. Use the web.
