Mark quality: live, delayed, stale and unavailable

The four price-quality states on an open position, the exact age rule behind each one, and why futures marks are always labelled delayed.

What this does

Every open position carries a small status chip beside its price. It tells you how much to trust that price. VEXA ships the provenance with the number rather than presenting every price as equally good.

Before you start

Mark quality only exists on Portfolio, which is a web, iPad and Android tablet screen. Phones do not have it.

The four states

ChipWhat it meansThe rule
Livea current pricecrypto only, and the mark is under 5 minutes old
Delayedusable, but not this secondeverything that is not crypto, and the mark is under 96 hours old
Staletoo old to act oncrypto over 5 minutes old, or anything else over 96 hours old
Unavailableno price at allthe price is missing or zero, or it has no timestamp

Live and Delayed are usable. Stale and Unavailable are not, and positions in those two states are left out of the Unrealized P&L, Gross exposure and Net exposure tiles.

Why nothing but crypto is ever live

Crypto trades continuously, so a five-minute-old price is a fair current price. Equities and futures do not, and VEXA’s market data for futures arrives on a ten-minute delay by provider tier. A futures position therefore reads Delayed even during the session, and that is correct rather than a fault.

Why a delayed mark can be days old

The window is 96 hours because markets close. An equity position priced at Friday’s close and read on Monday morning is roughly 60 hours old, and that close is still the right price.

Over a long holiday weekend, a mark on the older side of that window is still the last real price the market printed.

Steps

  1. Open Portfolio in the sidebar.
  2. Read the Mark quality tile at the top for the summary count.
  3. Set the outcome control to Mark issues to list only the problem positions.
  4. Press Refresh marks to try again for a current price.

What you should see

A chip on every row, and a mark quality tile reading something like 12 of 14 usable marks. When everything is priced, the tile says all marks are usable and no banner appears.

On the web, prices re-read when you open the screen, when your positions change, when you come back to the tab, and every 30 seconds while any crypto position is open.

If it doesn’t work

  • Everything says unavailable. VEXA has no market data for those symbols. Indian market symbols on NSE, BSE and MCX have no data provider connected, so they cannot be priced.
  • A US equity has been stale for days. Refresh marks. If it persists, the symbol may have changed ticker or been delisted.
  • A futures position never says live. It never will. The data is ten minutes delayed by tier.
  • The exposure tiles look too small. Unusable marks are excluded on purpose. The subtitle tells you how many positions were left out.
