Gross and net P&L
Why the Trades screen shows the same figure for Total P&L and Net P&L, and where to find the gross number that excludes commissions.
What this does
VEXA reports two P&L figures. This explains which is which, and why one screen appears to show the same number twice.
The convention
Every trade’s P&L in VEXA is already net of commission. Costs are subtracted when the trade is built, not afterwards.
net P&L = what you kept, after commissions and fees
gross P&L = net P&L + commissions
So gross is the larger number, and the gap between them is exactly what trading cost you.
Why the Trades screen shows the same number twice
The Trades screen has five tiles across the top, two of which are labelled Total P&L and Net P&L. They show the same figure.
This looks like a display fault and it is not. Both add up the same trade P&L values, and those values are already net. There is no separate gross total on that screen for them to differ by. The Total Commission tile beside them is the number you would add back to get gross.
Where to find the gross figure
The Journal day card is the one place VEXA puts them side by side. Its header shows Net P&L for the day, and one of the six tiles beneath is Gross P/L.
gross P/L = sum of (trade P&L + trade commission)
Compare the two on a busy day and the difference is what the day cost you in fees. On a scalping day that gap can be a large share of the result, which is the point of showing both.
Which screen shows what
| Screen | Shows | Net or gross |
|---|---|---|
| Metrics, Total P&L tile | one total | net |
| Metrics, Commissions tile | total fees, with a leading minus | the cost itself |
| Trades, Total P&L and Net P&L tiles | the same total twice | net |
| Trades, Total Commission tile | total fees | the cost itself |
| Journal day card header | the day’s result | net |
| Journal day card, Gross P/L tile | the day before costs | gross |
The Trades screen exists on the web, iPad and Android tablet. On iPhone and Android phone the Journal day card is where you compare the pair.
What you should see
Gross always larger than net by exactly the commission total for the same set of trades. If it is not, you are comparing two different filter sets rather than two different measures.
If it doesn’t work
- Gross and net are identical on the Journal card. Your imports carry no commission data. Statement imports from some brokers do not include fees per trade.
- Your net total does not match your broker. Check the date range and account filter first, then whether your broker’s own statement is quoting gross.
- Commissions look far too small. A partial import can bring trades in without their fills, and fees ride on the fills.
