Time of day performance

How the hourly buckets are anchored to the market open, why a 09:32 trade lands in the 09:30 bucket, and what a drill-down from a bar actually selects.

Same on every platform Updated

What this does

This chart groups your trades by the time of day you entered them and totals each group. It answers whether the open, the middle of the session or the close is where your money is made.

Before you start

Trades are bucketed by entry time, not exit time. A position entered at 09:35 and closed at 15:50 belongs to the 09:30 bucket. This matches how the iPhone and Android apps bucket, so the same trade sits in the same bar everywhere.

The bucket sizes

Three bucket widths: 5 minutes, 15 minutes and 60 minutes.

The 60-minute buckets are anchored to 09:30, not to the top of the hour. They read 09:30 to 10:29, then 10:30 to 11:29, and so on. This exists because the US equity open is at 09:30 and an hourly grid anchored at 09:00 would split the open across two bars, which is the one bar most traders want to read on its own.

With no trades in your range, the chart draws an empty skeleton across market hours rather than a blank card, so you can tell “no trades” apart from “chart failed to load”.

What a drill-down selects

The window is half-open: it includes the start time and excludes the end time. A bar labelled 09:30 to 09:35 opens the trades entered from 09:30:00 through 09:34:59. A trade entered at exactly 09:35:00 belongs to the next bar, not to both.

This is why bar totals never double-count, and why a trade sitting exactly on a boundary appears in one list and not the other.

What you should see

Bars whose totals sum to your Total P&L for the range, and a drill-down whose trade count matches the number the bar reported.

If it doesn’t work

  • A trade is in the wrong bar. Check the entry time, not the exit time.
  • The hourly labels look off by half an hour. They are anchored at 09:30 on purpose.
  • Times do not match your platform’s clock. Trade times render in your display timezone. Set it under Profile > Display Preferences > Trade Display Timezone on the web, or Profile > Settings > Display Timezone on iPhone, iPad and Android.
  • The chart is an empty grid. There are no trades in range. Widen the date range.
