Why a chart is blank

Index options, Indian market symbols, delayed futures data and rate limiting all produce an empty chart for different reasons. Here is how to tell which one you have.

Same on every platform Updated

What this does

A blank chart is not a broken trade. Your P&L, your fills and your statistics all come from your broker and are unaffected. The chart is the one part of the page that needs a market data provider, and there are four separate reasons that provider can come back empty.

Before you start

The trade is fine. Nothing about a missing chart changes a number anywhere else in VEXA.

Steps

Same on every platform

  1. Open the trade and read the message on the chart rather than the blank space around it. The message is what tells you which of the four cases you have.
  2. Match it against the list below.
  3. If it is rate limiting, wait a few seconds and switch timeframe to force a fresh request.

The four reasons

1. It is an index

SPX, SPXW, NDX, RUT, DJX, VIX, XSP and MRUT are indices, not tradeable instruments, so there is no price series to chart. VEXA replaces the underlying chart with a card that says so.

The option contract chart underneath still draws. For an SPX options trade, scroll past the placeholder and the contract itself is charted normally.

2. It is an Indian market symbol

VEXA has no market data provider for NSE, BSE or MCX yet. Indian trades import correctly, their P&L is right and every metric counts them, but their charts are blank. There is nothing to configure and nothing you have done wrong.

3. Futures data is delayed, not missing

Futures market data arrives on a ten-minute delay. That is the data tier, not a fault. It means a futures chart is complete for anything more than ten minutes old, and thin at the very right edge for a position you closed a moment ago. Give it ten minutes and reopen the trade.

This is also why open futures positions show a Delayed mark rather than Live in your Portfolio.

4. You are being rate limited

Paging quickly through trades with the chevrons fires a chart request each time. Enough of them in a row and the provider starts refusing.

On the web app this is distinguishable: the chart says Rate limited, try again in a moment, rather than the no-data message. Wait a few seconds and switch timeframe to retry.

On Android the two cases share one message, because the backend returns an empty result for both. If you have just paged through ten trades, assume rate limiting and give it a moment. If the same trade is still empty a minute later, it is a data problem rather than a throttle.

Reading the messages

What the chart saysWhat it means

Index charts aren’t available yetCase 1. The contract chart below still works.
Rate limited, try again in a momentCase 4. Wait and retry.
No chart data available for this symbolThe provider has nothing. Cases 2 and 3, and anything else exotic.

What you should see

Once the data is there, candles for the window around your trade, with your entry and exit marked on them. For an index options trade you should see a placeholder card where the underlying chart would be and a working chart for the contract under it.

If it doesn’t work

Every chart is blank, not just one. That is a connection problem rather than a data problem. Reload the page or restart the app.

A US stock chart is blank. That is unusual. Check the symbol on the trade first, since a symbol that was mangled on import will not resolve. If the symbol is right, contact support with it.

The chart works on your laptop but not on your phone. Both use the same provider and the same window, so this is worth reporting. Include the symbol and the timeframe.
