Read playbook performance
What expectancy, profit factor and best performing time mean on a playbook, how each one is calculated, and what deleting a playbook does to its trades.
What this does
The Playbooks page ranks your setups against each other and reports what each one has actually returned. It is the page that answers “which of my setups should I be trading more of”.
Before you start
The Playbooks page is on web, iPad and Android tablet. iPhone and Android phone can assign trades to a playbook but have no page to read one on.
The numbers respect the date filter. The Playbooks page has its own date range that opens on the current month, so a playbook you have not traded this month can legitimately show nothing. Reset or widen the range before concluding a setup is dead.
A playbook needs trades before its numbers mean anything. Win rate on four trades is noise. The best win rate card will not even name a playbook with fewer than three trades.
Steps
- Open Playbooks in the sidebar.
- Set the date range in the Date Filter card, or use its Reset control to snap back to this month.
- Read the overview cards along the top: best performing, worst performing, most active and best win rate.
- Read the All Playbooks table underneath for every playbook’s stats side by side.
- Click a playbook to open its detail page, with tabs for Rules, Stats and Trades.
- Tap Playbooks in the sidebar.
- Set the date range.
- Read the four stat cards: BEST PERFORMING, LEAST PERFORMING, MOST ACTIVE and BEST WIN RATE.
- Tap a playbook to open its detail, criteria and trade list.
- Tap Playbooks in the sidebar.
- Set the date range with the from and to pickers.
- Read the four overview cards, then the All Playbooks table: Net P&L, Win Rate, Trades, Profit Factor and Expectancy per playbook.
- Tap a playbook to open its detail view, with its stat cards, criteria and trade list.
What each number means
Total P&L is the sum of the P&L of every trade in the playbook, already net of commissions.
Win rate is winners divided by all trades in the playbook.
win rate = trades with P&L above zero / all trades in the playbook x 100
Profit factor is what you made for every dollar you lost. Above 1.0 means the setup is profitable.
profit factor = total of winning P&L / absolute total of losing P&L
A playbook with no losing trades at all reports 999 rather than infinity. It is a placeholder for “no losses yet”, not a real measurement.
Expectancy is the average result per trade, and it is the single most useful number on the page.
expectancy = total P&L / number of trades
A playbook with a 40% win rate and an expectancy of $120 beats a playbook with a 70% win rate and an expectancy of $15.
Max drawdown is the deepest peak to trough fall of the playbook’s own equity curve, taking its trades in order.
Best Performing Time and Worst Performing Time are the times of day this setup has worked and not worked. Both are annotated with your timezone, so read the abbreviation before acting on them.
Average trade duration is the mean time from open to close across the playbook’s trades.
Break-even trades count as losses here
Playbook stats put a trade with exactly zero P&L in the losing bucket when working out Average Loss. The win rate percentages on Metrics and on the Trades page treat a break-even trade as neither a win nor a loss. The Journal day card’s W/L tile counts it as a loser, the same as playbook stats do. If a playbook’s Average Loss looks gentler or harsher than you expect and you scratch a lot of trades, this is why.
Deleting a playbook
Deleting asks you to confirm and tells you what happens:
All trades will be unassigned from this playbook. This action cannot be undone.
Your trades are not deleted. They lose the playbook assignment and the criteria you ticked against it, and they stay in VEXA with their tags, ratings, notes and P&L intact.
There is no way to recover the assignments afterwards, so if you are reorganising, edit the playbook rather than deleting and rebuilding it.
What you should see
Each playbook with a trade count, a P&L and a win rate. The overview cards name a playbook each, and the best win rate card stays empty until at least one playbook has three trades in range.
If it doesn’t work
Every playbook shows nothing. The date filter is on the current month. Widen it.
Profit factor reads 999. The playbook has no losing trades in the range. It is not an error and it is not a real ratio.
A playbook’s trade count is lower than you expected. The page honours your account filter as well as the date range. Clear the account selector and check again.
