Why Apple Watch adds Exercise minutes during a session

Live heart rate on Apple Watch needs an active workout, so your Activity rings register Exercise minutes. VEXA discards the workout and saves nothing to Apple Health.

What this does

Explains a side effect you will notice on your Activity rings, and why VEXA cannot avoid it.

Sentinel needs a live pulse, since it reads physiology rather than trades. Apple Watch samples heart rate only occasionally when it is idle. The one supported way to make it sample continuously is to run a workout session, so the VEXA watch app starts one, of the mind and body type, for as long as Sentinel is monitoring.

Apple counts time in a workout towards your Exercise ring. Sitting still and watching charts will therefore add Exercise minutes to your day. VEXA has no way to opt out of that while keeping the sensor awake.

What VEXA does control is what gets saved, and it saves nothing. The workout is discarded when monitoring stops. The disclosure shown when you start a session says it plainly:

Live heart-rate streaming requires an active workout session, which Apple uses to keep the heart sensor reading. As a result, your Apple Activity Rings may register some Exercise minutes during a Sentinel session. Vexa does not save the workout to Apple Health.

The watch app’s own health prompt says the same thing:

Sentinel does not save workouts to Health. A short-lived workout session is started solely to keep the heart-rate sensor active during a Sentinel monitoring session and is discarded when monitoring stops.

Before you start

This applies to Apple Watch only. Bluetooth chest straps and armbands broadcast on their own and need no workout, so they leave your rings alone.

The Exercise minutes stay on your rings for that day. They are Apple’s record of the workout being active, not a VEXA record, so VEXA cannot remove them afterwards.

Battery use goes up during monitoring, because the sensor is sampling continuously.

Steps

If the rings matter to you more than the wrist convenience, switch to a device that does not need a workout.

  1. Open VEXA Sentinel from the sidebar.
  2. Open the Settings tab.
  3. Under Wearable Source, choose a chest strap or the Polar Verity Sense.
  4. Pair it on your phone.
  1. Open Home, then tap Sentinel.
  2. Tap the gear icon, then Sentinel Settings.
  3. Tap Wearable Source and choose a chest strap or the Polar Verity Sense.
  4. Follow the setup steps for that device.

What you should see

With Apple Watch: a workout indicator on the watch while a session runs, Exercise minutes accruing on the rings, and no workout in the Apple Fitness app or Apple Health after the session ends.

With a Bluetooth strap: no workout indicator, no change to your rings, and heart rate still streaming into Sentinel.

If it doesn’t work

A workout was saved to Apple Health. VEXA does not save one. Check whether another app, or the watch’s own workout app, was recording at the same time.

The Exercise minutes look wrong for how long you traded. Apple decides what counts as an Exercise minute using its own movement and heart rate thresholds. VEXA has no input into the calculation.

You want the reading without the workout. Not possible on Apple Watch. Use a chest strap or the Verity Sense armband.
