Default rules and custom rules

Which Sentinel rules you can edit, which you can only switch on and off, and where your rules live.

WebiPhoneAndroid Updated

What this does

A Sentinel rule is a condition on your body and an action to take when it is met. Every rule reads physiology, a clock, or a state derived from physiology. None of them can read your trades, so a rule like “warn me after three losers” is not something Sentinel can express.

There are two kinds.

Default rules ship with Sentinel. You can switch them on and off, and you cannot change what they fire on. The iPhone app says it directly: “Default rules cannot be modified, only enabled/disabled.”

Custom rules are the ones you make, either from scratch or by adopting a template from the gallery. They are yours: name, conditions, action, severity and cooldown can all be edited, and you can delete them.

Adopting a template creates a custom rule. Once it is yours you can change its numbers, which is what most people do after living with the default for a week.

Before you start

Your rules live on your account, not on a device. Create one on the phone and it is there on the web, and it is the same rule rather than a copy.

A rule only fires while a session is running. Sentinel evaluates rules on incoming biometric readings, so with no session there are no readings and nothing to evaluate.

Rules are throttled on purpose. Five rules meeting their conditions at once will not produce five alerts. See Why you did not get an intervention.

The template catalogue is not identical on every platform, and rules with the same name can fire at different numbers depending on where you adopted them. Check what yours is set to rather than assuming. See The rule template gallery.

Steps

  1. Open VEXA Sentinel from the sidebar.
  2. Open the Rules tab.
  3. Your rules are under Trading Rules. Use the toggle on a row to enable or disable it.
  4. Use the edit and delete controls on a custom rule, or Add Rule to make a new one.
  1. Open Home, then tap Sentinel.
  2. Tap Trading Rules.
  3. Use the toggle on a row to enable or disable it.
  4. Tap a custom rule to edit it, or use the add control to make a new one.

What you should see

A list of rules with a toggle on each. Custom rules open into the editor when tapped. Default rules show their conditions but will not let you change them.

With no custom rules yet, the list shows “No custom rules yet” and the template gallery sits below it.

A disabled rule stays in the list, greyed, and stops being evaluated immediately.

If it doesn’t work

You cannot edit a rule. It is a default rule. Disable it and build your own version with the numbers you want.

A rule you disabled still fired. Check whether you have two rules with similar names. Adopting the same template twice creates two rules.

A rule never fires. Either its conditions are not being met, or a throttle is holding it back, or the metric it watches is not being supplied by your device. HRV rules need a device that sends beat-to-beat data.

Rules you created on your phone are missing on the web. Sign in to the same account. Rules are stored per account.
