My widget shows old data
How often home screen widgets refresh, why the P&L widget shows your last trading day rather than today, and how far back widget metrics look.
What this does
A widget that disagrees with the app is usually correct and behind. Widgets are refreshed by the operating system on its own schedule, not by VEXA on demand, and they answer a slightly different question than the app does.
Three reasons the numbers differ
1. Widgets refresh on the system’s clock
VEXA asks the system to refresh its widgets roughly hourly, and also whenever the app writes new data. The system honours that as a hint rather than a promise, and it deprioritises widgets when your battery is low or the app has not been opened for a while. In practice a widget can sit up to about three hours behind. Opening VEXA is the fastest way to push fresh numbers into it.
2. The daily P&L widget shows your last trading session, not today
If you did not trade today, the widget shows the most recent day you did. On a Sunday it will show Friday.
3. Widget metrics look back thirty days
The performance figures on a widget are computed over a rolling thirty-day window. The app can show you a range you chose yourself, so a widget and a page set to “this year” will legitimately disagree.
Steps
- Open VEXA and let the screen you care about load. That writes fresh data for the widget to read.
- Go back to your home screen and wait a moment for the widget to redraw.
- If it is still stale, remove the widget and add it again from the widget gallery.
- Check that low power mode is off. It delays widget refreshes across the whole system.
- Open VEXA and let the screen you care about load.
- Go back to your home screen and wait a moment for the widget to redraw.
- If it is still stale, remove the widget and add it again from the widget gallery.
- The extra large VEXA Score widget prints its own last-updated timestamp. Read that before deciding the widget is broken.
- Open VEXA and let the screen you care about load.
- Go back to your home screen and wait a moment for the widget to redraw.
- If it is still stale, remove the widget and add it again.
- Check whether battery optimisation is restricting VEXA in your system settings. A restricted app gets far fewer background refreshes.
- Open VEXA and let the screen you care about load.
- Go back to your home screen and wait a moment for the widget to redraw.
- If it is still stale, remove the widget and add it again.
- Check whether battery optimisation is restricting VEXA in your system settings.
What you should see
The widget matches what the app showed when you last opened it, for the same thirty-day window. The score on a widget matches the gauge on the dashboard.
Empty widgets are not broken
- NO ACTIVE STREAK means your streak is genuinely zero, not that the data failed to load. A day that closes at exactly zero P&L breaks a win streak. A day with no trades does not.
- NO RECENT TRADES means there is no trading day in range to report.
- Dashes rather than a score mean the score has not been calculated. See My scores are stuck on ”- -”.
If it doesn’t work
- The app is wrong too. Then this is not a widget problem. See New trades aren’t showing up.
- The widget never updates, even right after opening the app. Remove it, force the app closed, reopen it, then add the widget again.
- You want to know what each widget shows. See Add VEXA widgets to your home screen.
