A chart won't load

The difference between a chart with no data, a chart that was throttled, and an instrument VEXA cannot chart at all.

What this does

An empty price chart on a trade has three different causes that look identical on screen. Working out which one you have takes about ten seconds, and only one of them is worth retrying.

The three causes

1. The instrument has no chart

Some things you can trade have no chartable underlying. Index options are the clearest case: contracts on SPX, SPXW, NDX, VIX, RUT, XSP, DJX and MRUT show a placeholder instead of a price chart, because the index itself is not an instrument the market-data provider quotes as a series.

Indian market symbols are the other case. Trades on NSE, BSE and MCX import correctly and appear everywhere else in VEXA, but there is no market-data provider wired up for those exchanges yet, so their charts are blank. This one is a gap, not a setting you can change.

2. The request was throttled

Market data is rate limited. When a request is refused, the response VEXA gets back is an empty result, exactly the same shape as a genuine “no bars for this window”. So a throttled chart and an empty chart look the same. The difference is that a throttled chart usually fills in on the second try a minute later.

3. The window genuinely has no bars

Outside market hours, on holidays, or for a symbol that stopped trading, there are no bars to draw. Futures charts are on a ten-minute delayed feed, so the most recent minutes of a live session are never present and the mark is labelled Delayed rather than Live. That is the tier VEXA subscribes to, not a fault.

Before you start

Check the symbol on the trade first. If it is an index option or an Indian exchange symbol, stop here. No amount of retrying will produce a chart.

Steps

Note the symbol on the trade and rule out the two unsupported cases above.
Leave the trade and open it again to re-request the bars.
If it is still empty, wait a minute and try once more. A throttled request clears on its own.
Change the timeframe. A different timeframe is a different request and sometimes succeeds where the default did not.

What you should see

Candles covering the period your trade was open, with your entry and exit marked on them. For futures, the last ten minutes of a live session will be absent and the mark badge reads Delayed.

If it doesn’t work

Every chart in the app is empty, not this one alone. That is a connection problem rather than a data problem. See A screen is blank or stuck loading.
