Navigation disappeared on my tablet

Why the sidebar vanishes on an Android tablet in split screen, and the three other layouts VEXA switches to by screen width.

Android tablet Updated

What this does

On an Android tablet the sidebar can vanish completely, leaving a screen with content and no way to get anywhere else. The most common trigger is split screen. Your data is fine and nothing has crashed. VEXA has switched to a narrower layout that, at that width, has no navigation in it.

What is actually happening

VEXA picks its layout from the width available to it, not from the kind of device you own. There are four states, and you can move between them without meaning to.

Width availableWhat you get
Tablet, landscapeA pinned sidebar down the left
Tablet, portraitA pill bar at the top with a menu button that slides the sidebar in
Tablet in split screen or a small floating windowThe narrow layout, which has no sidebar
Any width, with the keyboard openBottom navigation hides so the text field sits above the keyboard

Split screen halves the width VEXA is given. That is usually enough to drop it below the threshold for the tablet layout, and the sidebar goes with it.

Steps

Android tablet only

  1. Leave split screen. Drag the divider all the way to the edge, or use the recents screen to bring VEXA back to full screen.
  2. If you are in portrait, look for the pill bar across the top and tap the menu button on it. That slides the sidebar out over the page.
  3. If you are in landscape and the sidebar is a narrow strip of icons, that is its collapsed state, which is how it starts. Tap the expand control to see the labels.
  4. If nothing brings it back, close VEXA from the recents screen and open it again full screen.

What you should see

In landscape, a sidebar down the left listing Dashboard, Journal, Metrics, Weekly Overview, Rules Tracker, VEXA Chat, VEXA Voice, Sentinel, Patterns, Trades, Playbooks, Portfolio and Communities, with an account row and your profile chip beneath them. In portrait, the same list arrives from the menu button on the pill bar.

  • The system back button does not walk backwards through sidebar destinations. Top-level screens crossfade rather than stack, so back leaves the app instead of returning to the previous section. Use the sidebar to go back.
  • Six rows in the tablet profile’s Settings section each open their own pane: Display Timezone, Risk Management, Health Connect, Notifications, Leaderboard and Privacy. Display Timezone, Leaderboard and Privacy are fully working, and Privacy is where Export My Data lives. The other three show a summary you cannot change from the tablet, so set risk limits, Health Connect and notifications on your phone. Terms of Use, App Walkthrough, Rate VEXA and Help & Support work normally.

If it doesn’t work

  • The sidebar is there but the page is empty. That is a loading problem, not a layout one. See A screen is blank or stuck loading.
  • You are on an iPad, not an Android tablet. iPad keeps a pill bar with a sidebar button in portrait, so navigation is one tap away rather than gone.
  • You want to know which features exist on which device. See What works on each device.
