I'm not getting notifications
The five gates every VEXA notification passes through, and how to check each one. Includes why the web never sends push.
What this does
Every notification VEXA sends is checked against five gates before it leaves. If any one blocks it, nothing arrives and nothing tells you why. Check the five in the order below.
Before you start
The web app never sends push notifications. It has no push registration at all. Sentinel interventions reach an open web tab over its live connection, so closing the tab means nothing arrives there. If you want alerts, they come from the phone app.
Android tablet cannot change these settings. The Notifications row in the tablet profile opens a pane, but it holds three toggles stored on that tablet alone, so none of the five gates below are on it. Change your notification settings on your phone; they belong to your account, so the change applies everywhere.
The five gates
- The operating system. If VEXA’s notifications are switched off at the system level, nothing else matters. VEXA detects this and shows “Notifications disabled in Settings” with a button that opens the right system screen.
- The master toggle. Enable Push Notifications inside VEXA. Off here means off for every type listed in the next gate. Sentinel is not one of them: its interventions have their own switch and keep arriving with this one off.
- The per-type toggle. Each notification type has its own switch: Pattern Alerts, Score Updates, Daily Reflection and Next-Day Reflection.
- Quiet hours. If quiet hours are on and now falls inside them, the notification is suppressed rather than queued.
- The daily cap. Max Daily Notifications limits how many you receive in a day. It can be set as low as two and no higher than six. Once you hit it, the rest of the day is silent for the four types above. Sentinel is outside this cap too, so its interventions are not counted and are not stopped by it. A Sent Today counter shows where you are, and it resets at midnight in the timezone you set.
Steps
- Tap the circular avatar at the top right of Home.
- Open Settings, then Notifications.
- Check the status line at the top. If it reads that notifications are disabled, use the button there to open iOS settings and allow them.
- Turn Enable Push Notifications on.
- Turn on the specific types you want.
- Check Quiet Hours and the Max Daily Notifications slider, and read the Sent Today counter beside it.
- Confirm the timezone on this screen matches where you actually are, because both quiet hours and the daily reset use it.
- Open the profile chip at the bottom of the sidebar.
- Open Settings, then Notifications.
- Check the status line at the top and allow notifications in iOS settings if it says they are off.
- Turn Enable Push Notifications on.
- Turn on the specific types you want.
- Check Quiet Hours, the Max Daily Notifications slider and the Sent Today counter.
- Confirm the timezone on this screen matches where you actually are.
- Tap the circular avatar at the top right of Home.
- Open Settings, then Notifications.
- Check the status line at the top. If notifications are blocked at the system level, use the button there to open Android’s app settings and allow them.
- Turn Enable Push Notifications on.
- Turn on the specific types you want.
- Check Quiet Hours and the Max Daily Notifications slider, and read the Sent Today counter.
- Confirm the timezone on this screen matches where you actually are.
- The Notifications row in the tablet profile opens a pane of three tablet-only toggles. Nothing on this surface will change the account settings described above.
- Open VEXA on your Android phone and follow the Android steps above.
- Come back to the tablet. Notifications are an account setting, so what you changed on the phone applies here.
What you should see
The status line reads that notifications are enabled, the master toggle is on, and at least one type is on. Sent Today is below your daily cap.
Sentinel alerts are separate
Sentinel’s intervention alerts have their own master switch, and turning that off silences its critical alerts as well as its gentle ones. That switch is the only one that reaches them: none of the five gates above apply to Sentinel, quiet hours included. What holds Sentinel back instead is its own pacing, which spaces interventions out rather than capping your day. A critical intervention alert cannot be snoozed or dismissed with a back gesture: it waits for you to accept or dismiss it deliberately.
Sentinel session reminders are separate again. On iPhone they are created inside Sentinel Settings, under Session Reminders, and they can be timed against the US market open rather than your clock so they stay correct through daylight saving changes.
If it doesn’t work
- You get some types but not others. That is the per-type toggle or the daily cap, not a fault.
- You get nothing at all and everything is on. Reinstalling the app re-registers it for push. Sign back in with the same method afterwards.
- You had an alert on your watch and not your phone. That is normal for a Sentinel session running on the watch.
- Still nothing. Send support your platform, your timezone setting and roughly when you expected an alert. See Contact support.
