Manage your chat history
Reopen a past conversation, delete one, or download a copy. The gesture is different on every surface.
What this does
Every conversation you have with VEXA is kept. This is how you find an old one, open it again, delete it, or take a copy away with you.
Before you start
A conversation covers one day, measured by your device’s own clock. The first message you send after midnight starts a new one, and each conversation is named after your first message in it.
Deleting is permanent. There is no archive and no undo. Only the web asks you to confirm, and it says as much: the conversation is removed and the action cannot be undone. On iPhone, iPad and both Android surfaces the delete happens the moment you tap, with nothing to confirm and nothing to cancel.
Downloading a copy is a web-only feature. The apps can read and delete, not export.
Steps
- Click VEXA Chat in the sidebar. The conversation list is on the left. If it is hidden, use the history icon in the header, or Expand history.
- Click a conversation to reopen it.
- To delete the one you have open, click the trash icon in the chat header, then Delete.
- To delete several at once, click the trash icon at the top of the history list. It turns into Cancel and a checkbox appears on every row.
- Tick the ones you want, then click Delete Selected.
- Tap the second tab in the bar at the bottom, the VEXA logo mark.
- Tap the history icon in the header to open your past conversations.
- Tap a conversation to reopen it.
- To delete one, swipe it left and tap Delete. A full swipe deletes it in one movement.
- Tap VEXA Chat in the sidebar. Your conversations are listed beside the chat.
- Tap a conversation to reopen it.
- To delete one, press and hold it, or right-click with a trackpad or mouse, then choose Delete.
- Tap the second tab in the bar at the bottom, the VEXA logo mark.
- Tap the history icon in the header. The panel is headed Chat History.
- Tap a conversation to reopen it.
- To delete one, swipe the row left to reveal the trash, then tap the trash. The row stays open until you tap it, so a stray swipe deletes nothing.
- Tap VEXA Chat in the sidebar. Your conversations are listed under Chats.
- Tap a conversation to reopen it.
- To delete one, tap the trash icon on its row. There is no swipe here.
What you should see
Each entry is named after your first message in that conversation, cut short if it was long. Tapping one loads the messages back into the chat and you carry on from where you stopped.
What sits under the name is not the same everywhere. Web shows a relative date and a message count. iPhone leads with the date. iPad shows the date and the count on one line. Android tablet shows the date and time. Android phone shows a time and nothing else, so a conversation from last month reads exactly like one from this morning; use the order of the list rather than the timestamp there.
With nothing saved yet you get a short empty state rather than a blank panel: “No previous conversations” on web, “No Chat History” on iPhone, “No previous conversations yet.” on Android phone, and “No conversations yet” on iPad and Android tablet.
Starting a new chat does not throw away the one you were in. All four apps say so first, asking “Begin a new chat with VEXA?” and telling you the current conversation will be saved to chat history. The web starts the new one without asking.
Download a copy
On the web, the download icon in the chat header saves the open conversation as a plain text file named for today’s date, with each line marked as yours or VEXA’s.
For everything at once, including conversations from the apps, export your data from your profile. That covers chat sessions, voice transcripts and the rest.
Deleting a conversation does not undo what VEXA learned
Facts VEXA has drawn out of a conversation are stored separately, so they survive the conversation being deleted. See How VEXA remembers you.
If your aim is to remove what VEXA knows about you rather than tidy the list, deleting conversations one by one will not get you there.
If it doesn’t work
“Couldn’t load your chat history.” The list failed to load. Pull to refresh on mobile, or reload the page.
“Couldn’t load this chat session.” That one conversation failed to open. Try it again, and if it keeps failing, report it with the date of the conversation.
A conversation you deleted is still there. The list can lag behind the delete on a slow connection. Refresh before deleting it a second time.
You cannot find the history control on a phone. It is an icon in the header of the chat screen, not a menu item. On both phones it sits at the top of the conversation, next to the control for starting a new chat.
You want to rename a conversation. You cannot, on any surface. Names come from your first message, so opening with a clear first line is the only way to influence them.
A conversation you had in the chat bubble on the web is not in the list. The bubble does not save conversations. Anything you want to keep should be asked on the chat page. See Chat with VEXA.
