Every community has an 8-character code. Copy it to invite people, regenerate it to lock out everyone who has the old one.

What this does

Every community has one invite code. Anyone who has it can join, up to the member limit. It is created automatically when the community is created, and admins can replace it.

Before you start

Anyone can join with the code. There is no approval step, no request queue, and no way to invite one named person. Treat the code the way you would treat a shared link.

Regenerating is the only way to take a code out of circulation.

Steps

  1. Choose Communities in the sidebar, then open the Communities tab.
  2. Open the community.
  3. Choose the invite code to copy it. A short Copied confirmation appears.
  4. To replace it, open the community settings and regenerate. This is available to admins.

  3. Open the overflow menu and choose Settings. Admins only.
  4. Copy the code, or tap Regenerate Code to replace it.

  4. Use the Invite Code card to copy the code. A toast reads “Code copied to clipboard”.
  5. Use the regenerate control on the same card to replace it.

What regenerating does

The old code stops working immediately. Anyone holding it gets a rejection the next time they try to join.

Members who already joined stay in the community. Regenerating only blocks new joins with the old code. To remove someone who is already in, see Community roles and moderation.

What you should see

The code is shown as 8 characters on the community screen with a copy control next to it. After copying, a brief confirmation replaces the button label or appears as a toast, depending on the platform.

After regenerating, a different 8-character code is on screen. There is no list of previous codes.

If it doesn’t work

  • Someone says the code does not work. Confirm you are reading the current code rather than one from an older message, and confirm the community is not at its 100-member limit.
  • You cannot find the code. Only admins see it. If you joined rather than created the community, ask the admin.
  • You want to invite one specific person privately. Not supported. The code is the only mechanism, so send it directly rather than posting it.
  • You gave the code to the wrong person. Regenerate it, then remove them from the member list if they already joined.
